MIAMI, Fla. — Retired Navy Commander Phil Ehr, the Democratic nominee for Congress in Florida’s 28th District, today formally sent debate invitations to Republican incumbent Carlos Giménez and No Party Affiliation candidate Eddy Rojas, calling for two public debates before the November 3 general election, one in Miami-Dade County and one in Monroe County.

The written invitations were sent September 22 by overnight delivery to both candidates. Ehr proposed that the debates be hosted by credible, independent media or civic organizations, moderated by mutually acceptable individuals and broadcast or livestreamed so voters throughout the district can watch.

“The voters of Florida’s 28th District deserve the opportunity to hear directly from all three of us on the same stage, answering the same questions and explaining what we have done, what we believe and what we intend to do for this community,” Ehr said. “This district stretches from Miami-Dade through the Florida Keys. I believe voters in both counties deserve a debate in their community. I’m ready. Let’s set the dates.”

Ehr proposed discussions covering issues including affordability, housing and property insurance; healthcare and retirement security; immigration and border security; government ethics; veterans’ services; national security; U.S. policy toward Cuba and Venezuela; environmental protection; and responsible development.

The campaign has asked Giménez and Rojas to respond by 5:00 p.m. Friday, September 25, allowing representatives from the campaigns to begin coordinating potential hosts, formats, rules and dates.

“There is plenty we disagree about. That is precisely why debates matter,” Ehr said. “Voters should be able to compare our records and our plans directly, without thirty-second ads, talking points or anyone speaking for us. Carlos, Eddy, I hope to see you on the debate stage.”
